Arte, the beloved waitress at the legendary H&H Carwash on Yandell Street in El Paso, died in her sleep Monday morning. She was 79. She left behind three children, six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren. She bequeathed us the memory of her remarkable smile, a tough & wicked sense of humor, a pride in her work and a passion and joy in serving others. She had friends and admirers all across the city and the country who knew her as one of the brightest and most beautiful faces in that luminescent and beloved diner on Yandell that we all want to claim as if we’d discovered it ourselves. Before we opened our mouths, she knew what we were going to order. / Lee
