VIDEO: J.L. POWERS talks about THIS THING CALLED THE FUTURE

J.L. Powers visited our booth at the Mid-Winter American Library Association Conference in San Diego earlier in January. It was a busy time, but we were able to talk about her new coming-of-age novel This Thing Called the Future about 14-year-old Khosi growing up in post-apartheid South Africa during the time of HIV. Good book, good interview, good person. You'll enjoy this little video.

This is one of my top most-anticipated 2011 debuts! I have never read a book set in South Africa and it sounds like an especially fascinating read because it deals with post-apartheid S. Africa.

And oh man, it might be a tearjerker too. I really hope everything works out for Khosi and her crush :) I love all the elements mixed in this book: healing, HIV, South Africa, just growing up in general. I can't believe there are so few medical doctors who help the working class people dealing with HIV :(
